The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of maternal parenting and children¡¯s adaptation, mediated by maternal neurosis symptoms and separation anxiety, on maternal overprotection according to the children¡¯s sex. The theoretical model was specified and estimated. Subjects of this study were consisted of 403 drawn from 2 kindergarten and 2 preschools in Cheong-ju City. The pilot study was used to examine the applicability of survey instrument. The test of model was done with analysis of correlational matrix in LISREL ¥· package using a maximum likelihood estimation. The theoretical model proposed was fitted adequately. The results were as follows: 1. Maternal experience of overprotective parenting exerted a direct effect on maternal neurosis symptoms. 2. Maternal experience of rejective parenting directly affected neurosis symptoms and separation anxiety of mothers. 3. Children¡¯s adaptation had a direct effect on maternal separation anxiety. 4. Maternal neurosis symptoms directly affected maternal separation-anxiety and overprotection. 5. Maternal separation anxiety had a direct effect on mother¡¯s overprotection. 6. Maternal overprotective and rejected parenting experience mediated by maternal neurosis symptoms and separation anxiety on mother¡¯s overprotection. 7. Children¡¯s adaptation indirectly affected maternal separation anxiety on mother¡¯s overprotection. As the result indicated, maternal separation-anxiety was the strongest factors predicting mother¡¯s overprotection followed by maternal separation-anxiety.
